Welcome to the Kangaroo Island Hunt Club Inc website. The K.I.H.C was originally formed in the early 1950s with a committee of six - John Samuel White, Jill Lovering, Gordon Turner, Peter Turner, John Dunn and Brian Fernandez. Most Hunts were at John White's Cygnet River property.

Hunting ceased in 1960 for fourteen years until interest was shown to reform with three meets in 1973 (not actually hunts as there was no Master) to gauge attendance. The Hunt Club was officially reformed in 1974 with the following office bearers:

President & Deputy Master Mr Jeff Jolly
Vice President & Master Mr Peter Turner
Secretary Mrs H Lazaroff
Assistant Secretary & Treasurer Mrs Jean Riedel
Committeeman Mr I Warner
Memberships were $3.00 rider, $2.00 Social, $1.00 Junior and $6.00 Family

The Opening Hunt was held on 28th April 1974 at Mr P H Turners "Minarka" property with eleven riders and fifteen carloads of spectators. Mr C R Morris who said he was also present at the Clubs very first season officially opened the Hunt. The KIHC only had two other courses in 1974, "Attunga" owned by Mr R E Dunstan and "Double J" owned by Mr Jeff Jolly. An average of thirteen horses attended that year.

1976 saw a record-breaking hunt with 36 horses and a membership of seventy-nine with fifty- one of those being riding members.

In 2002 the KIHC hosted the SAHCA Combined State Hunt Run on Robert and Lyn Coombes property "Halfway". Master Rodger Borgmeyer greeted forty-five horse and rider combinations, twenty-two of these were from KI and the remaining twenty-four from five other SA Hunt Clubs.

In 2005 we resumed the "Children's Hunt" now known as the "Invitation Hunt" to Pony Club members with a total of thirty three riders. Ages varied from 3yrs old to 64yrs young, with one family having three generations riding. In 2006 & 2007 we again hosted this hunt with twenty-two riders each year.

Two awards are presented at each hunt by the previous winner's, the "Don Telfer Crooked Horse Shoe Award" for the most entertaining rider, and the "Benney Family Spectators Choice Wheel Award" for the most entertaining spectator. We also run a lucky square draw and have a Fines Master to record and fine anything out of the ordinary (20c fine only).

Between 1974 & 2008 KIHC has had thirteen different Masters (three were lady Masters) with the Trethewey family having mother, father and son Master's totalling ten years service. Rodger Borgmeyer has served on the committee for thirty-two years with twelve years being Master. KIHC has had twelve different presidents (only one female).

Our Life Members are:

Rodger Borgmeyer, Sue Trethewey, Jeff Jolly, Lyn Coombe, Ralph Florance & Rose Benney

Hunting on KI is still strong with an average of thirty-three adult members and twelve junior members.

2008 will again see the KIHC host the SAHCA State Combined Run on the June Long Weekend with expectations of one hundred visitors and riders camping at Parndana and attending the informal Hunt at Lyndurst on Friday and then the main event at Richard & Suzanne Tretheweys "St Ives South" on Sunday.
