Hunt Report - Sunday 24th May 2009
Agincourt
Hunt Club Report May 24th

A wild and wet afternoon greated us at Agincourt property of Simon and Tessa Dennis. For those of us that arrived early the temptation to turn around and head straight home was almost overwhelming. The driving rain forcing us to take shelter in our vehicles, but as more floats and cars arrived our opportunity to sneak off disappeared.

As the rain set in and we tried to ready our steeds some of the later arrivals took one look at us and headed back out the gate, suddenly Sunday afternoon in front of the fire watching footy seemed a much better option.

Hunt at Agincourt was the much anticipated invitational run for pony club members, 11 riders braved the conditions to enjoy the sport of hunting. Before the main hunt began Olivia, Kate, Maddy, Zara, Jess, Alex and Cameron took part in a mini hunt led by Master Tony Blight. Both Bec’s pitched in to see that all the riders came back smiling and thoroughly drenched.

As the ponys from the mini hunt were being put away the master was attempting to gather his field for the main hunt; however half his field had fled the inclement conditions. 11 riders in total were put to shame by the remaining 11 riders including pony club members Lucille, April, Robbie and Justin.

So with his slightly smaller field and a declaration from the Master that it was in fact “perfect traditional English hunting weather”, the hunt began.

With 14 cars following the field across the greasy paddocks there was always going to be a few antics. A tip for newbie’s: it’s a good idea to always have your windows up when the paddocks are wet. Especially when the there is a smiling assassin among us.

Some had forgotten they were even in a paddock with seatbelts being worn and indicators used to turn though gates. Driving rain, foggy windows and dizziness took its toll on the spectators. Glimpses of the field were rare.

With the rain easing a little just before first stirrup cup the master took the opportunity to entertain the followers with a double take on the hill.

Kangaroo Islands own master chef reinvigorated the crowd with her culinary delights. Who would have ever though you could ever eat so well in the back paddock? YUM.

With riders back in the saddle the lady land holder was ruing her decision to be the gate girl. By the last gate she had well and truly reached saturation point.

As had the riders.

Dry clothes, hot soup, shelter, fines and awards revived an otherwise damp day.

Annie was awarded the steering wheel for assisting Simon with this year’s sorghum crop preparation and her perfect 4WD clover leaf wheelies.

Cherokee was awarded most entertaining rider narrowly defeating April who was spotted twice out of saddle.

Next hunt Lyndhurst Dawn hunt 7am ride off.
